Heard about this great TED video from my friend Leslie. Every parent, policy maker, boss and basically everyone should watch it. I shouldn't talk too much about what's in there, but the main takeaway for me at least is this

The problem with relying on Rules and Incentives is that it demoralizes the activity; it creates people who only care about the incentives.

Think about that the next time you try an promise an incentive to your kid in return for doing something that he should have enjoyed doing or he is responsible for doing.
